Photography is my window to the past, looking back to a time when life was simpler. The images I create soften the hard edges of our busy world, romancing reality to convey a sense of timelessness and serenity.
As a third-generation photographer, I was raised in a family of commercial and portrait photographers. I remember the smell of the oils and the artists that transformed a black and white photograph into a colored masterpiece. I have a passion for the romance of the past and try to recreate this timeless quality in my photographs. I think many people share this feeling and wish they could escape to a softer world.
Much of my inspiration comes from my passion for gardening as well as a love for children and traveling. I hold a Bachelor of Science degree in Visual Communications from Western Washington University where I specialized in photography and design.
My work begins with black and white photography. The images are custom-printed on fiber-based papers, then hand-colored using dyes, oils, and oil pencils. I add color selectively, allowing some of the black-and-white tones to remain. Subtle variations in photo processing and tinting make each work a unique creation. I am also concerned about preserving a family's history through heirloom photography and use archival materials and processing with all of my original work. Reproductions are also available.
My images have been featured in several gallery exhibitions, and two of my award-winning pieces are part of a touring exhibit that showcases the city of Edmonds, Washington.
